Is it safe to walk a dog at night?

Yes, with a little prep. Keep your dog on a standard leash, add a light or reflective gear to both of you, stick to a familiar well-lit route, and slow down at driveways and crossings. Lights help drivers notice you, but they never guarantee a driver has seen you.

Is a reflective dog leash enough for walking at night?

On its own, no. Reflective material only shows up when headlights hit it and it does nothing to light the sidewalk. Pair it with a clip-on dog collar light and a flashlight or headlamp for yourself.

What is the best light for walking a dog at night?

For the dog, a small rechargeable clip-on collar light that stays visible on top of the collar. For you, a headlamp if you have two leashes, or any flashlight you will actually keep turned on. The best light is the one you reliably bring.

Should I use a retractable leash at night?

We would skip it. In the dark you want your dog close enough to steer away from a driveway, a cyclist or a mystery snack on the sidewalk, and a thin retractable cord is nearly invisible to everyone else.
